Melvin Mark Companies
A quick visit to
Portland was all Melvin Mark, Sr. needed to start his business in the Rose
City. The New York-based real estate investor came west in the mid-1940s to
look at property investment opportunities.
He was immediately sold on the potential of this growing city. That visit turned
into one of many and
resulted in the birth of the Melvin Mark Companies. Melvin Mark, Sr. believed
in the future of the Pacific Northwest and of downtown Portland and backed his
beliefs with ongoing investment in historic downtown buildings. He made the first
of many acquisitions that
year and handed the day-to-day management reins of the new company to his son,
Melvin "Pete" Mark.
For more than 35 years after the death of his father, Melvin "Pete"
Mark guided Melvin Mark Companies from historic buildings
to major developments such as Crown Plaza, Columbia
Square, Robert Duncan Plaza, the Fifth Avenue Building
and the company's newest projects, Hilton Executive
Tower and Sunset Center at Tanasbourne. In 2001, the
company's leadership was turned over to M. James Mark
with Melvin "Pete" Mark taking on the role of Chairman
of the Board.
